Taking serious note of the latest decision of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Chandigarh Administration has speed up the enforcement of ban imposed on the use of polythene carry bags/plastic bags/plates/cups and other allied material in Union Territory of Chandigarh. As per NGT directions there is also provision of imposing fine of Rs.5, 000/- "Environmental Compensation" to the erring person/entity per event, along with seizure of such stocks.

With the help of this discussion platform the Administration requests you to 'report the violations' (attach pictures or other details) regarding use of plastic carry bag/plate/cup and allied items on ww.mygov.in. Also, we would like to read your suggestions/ideas as well as practical/workable solutions for complete imposition of plastic (carry bag/cup/plate and allied items) ban in Chandigarh.

Ban on use of plastic carry bags should be imposed without making any delay. All the roads and their sides are over polluted with these things. People who do not even need these bags ask the shop keepers to give them one. They go home and throw it in the trash. They don't even think of reusing it. They are very less aware of the harm they are imposing on the future of the Mother Earth. Encourage use of paper items which will create jobs as well due to its cost, people won't waste them.

I live in Taiwan and here i see general awareness and recycling is the only way to reduce consumption on plastic waste. If people know the difference between trash and plastic waste and keep them separately. garbage cars pick recycle waste separately from trash by this method gradually the problem will get reduced. major consumers disposable waste are restaurants and street market so it should be compulsory for them to separate plastic and organic waste and garbage van should dump it in place.

Every customer should be provided with a paper or cloth bag as when most of the people are shopping anywhere whether in malls or grocery stores only few people refuse to take plastic bags and in the case of plastic plates we can use the Bamboo Veneerware plates, sugar cane fibers plates, wood plates and Corelle plates as it is eco friendly and compostable

For packaging pastics are not only one way there are various ways if possible we can use pottery utensils as soil is good temperature responder for some products like pickels, curd ,milk, etc.& for other products use of natural materials like cotton bags for vegetables, paper bags for foodsuff like chips etc.for petro can,oil cans, use of recyclable bottles must be preferred due to this there will be new jobs for people who are perfect in making this packing products

Plastic bags should be gradually replaced by paper, cotton or jute bags. Govt should give a time frame i.e. suppose after two years from now plastic bags will not be available. It will increase the jute industry also. Govt can ask the IITs/universities to research a degradable bag preferably a jute type degradable bag that will dissolve once come to water or water based solution that can be prepared at home. Hence the degradable bags will dissolve at home and no need to throw outside.

Till we successfully find out alternate of poly material, 1. All the scrapped and used plastic should be collected, washed with recycled industrial water, cut into fine granules. 2. The above fine granules should be used to manufacture low strength bricks, planks, cubes and other shapes as per demand with the use of binding material. 3. The above production might be used in low strength partition wall, road divider, underground supporting bottom bed for road construction, garden brick etc.

To ban plastic the alternatives must be encouraged and made available easily. Promote cloth and jute bags at grocery shops by providing incentives. Such bags can be sold at grocery stores at discounted prices ( Say Rs 10-15) and plastic carry bags be charged Rs 2-3. Make customers understand after a couple of shopping, the permanent bag will still be there. Make leaf based and permanent plates and cutlery and discourage disposable plastic plates and cutlery by increasing tax on them.
