Taking serious note of the latest decision of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Chandigarh Administration has speed up the enforcement of ban imposed on the use of polythene carry bags/plastic bags/plates/cups and other allied material in Union Territory of Chandigarh. As per NGT directions there is also provision of imposing fine of Rs.5, 000/- "Environmental Compensation" to the erring person/entity per event, along with seizure of such stocks.

With the help of this discussion platform the Administration requests you to 'report the violations' (attach pictures or other details) regarding use of plastic carry bag/plate/cup and allied items on ww.mygov.in. Also, we would like to read your suggestions/ideas as well as practical/workable solutions for complete imposition of plastic (carry bag/cup/plate and allied items) ban in Chandigarh.

ban should be on plastic bags must , it should be at production level not at consumer or innocent people by appling fine on them.if there is no production where people can get the bags.eg : 30 years back we use to use cloth bags because at that no plastic bag manfacturing.

The tax on plastic disposals have to be in par with Tobacco products. So it makes it expensive. Shop keepers will not be able to give them free or will overcharge for plastic package. This will discourage usage. Paper plates, paper cups, Thermacol plates are harder to recycle as they are coated with plastic. They have to be banned.

Government applying fine of Rs. 5000 but ifs government Reward Rs. 2000 to that person who will inform about the persons who are using polythene without disclose that person's name. Then polythene will no longer survive in market. Also government should stop the manufacturing of polythene , if something is not in market how could someone use it. for ex: boy's /students want drugs , liquer , sex but why is it ban in india except delhi and some other Cities officially.

Plastic carry bags were available in shopping malls for free. To reduce plastic bag usage, these bags are charged Rs1 to 5 depending on size. One option is to make cloth / jute bags available at the cash counters instead of plastic bags - cost can be Rs 10 to 50 depending on size. Currently people don't bother to add plastic carry bag in bill as it is cheap. Once only cloth / jute bags are available, people will learn to bring bags with them when they come for shopping.

Most of our population is ignorant about impacts of their actions on the environment. It would be better to carry out sustained campaign in media- viz. TV,rasio,newspapers, billboards and schools to educate the public. Enforcing behavioral change through law will only create resistance in a section of the population.

Dear Sir. Banning plastic cannot be done so easily by center gov.if you want implement it.it has to be done by each gram panchayth good model for can be seen in gram panchayth of gonnicopal in kodagu district of Karnataka.where it is already implemented .no shop sell plastic bags fearing the fine or canceling d licence of offender .. So we have to implement it grass root leval not in national level. Regards Thirthan

I am from Kanya kumari district. It was once possible for our district to be a plastic free district, mainly because of the strict rule imposing the ban. As a commoner, I remember that I was scared to carry any plastic bag, as I knew that I will be strictly fined. Also, the shop keepers were having other alternatives like jute bags, cotton bags or paper bags. respected sir, we are attaining restrictions over the use of Polly carry bags.....which is very good....but i wana ask uh one thing !! is only carying polythene bag contains polythene ?? then why only you restricted this only.....and why not others products too....which contains polythene in major..... we must put restrictions on them too......

It is very difficult to change the general public using the plastic bags. The reasons are 1. Not all are literate in India and responsible for such self discipline 2. It is humongous job to reach 120 Crore people to propagate this So instead why don't the Govt simply ban the production of such carry bags, very easy to close few hundred factories producing such bags ? Why the Govt is spending Crores of money in advertisement to reach out people ?
