http://ndmindia.nic.in/NPDM-101209.pdf

In case of any disaster many organisations contribute & funds are pouring in, also the mitigation plans are in place. What we lack is manpower. I think there shall be a platform where people shall self nominate themselves as a volunteer and reach the needy with neccessary help. Corporates calls for such volunteers and they can be send as a part of social responsibility.

Proper awareness should be taught in schools and institutes regarding natural disasters, there should be guidelines that will help the citizens deal with any unforeseen disaster that occurs. A subject on this can be introduced in institutes with practical demonstration to deal with problems of natural calamities.

For making any society or nation, disaster resilient, a culture of disaster preparedness is required. It means, institutionalizing disaster preparedness with various activities. Education-School and Colleges, Business Units, Residential units etc should internalize disaster preparedness. Capacity Building of all stakeholders must be addressed. Also, investing in disaster preparedness by Central Government/ State Government and institutions would be required.

Disaster in the most commonly used form usually tends to not include ongoing disasters like epidemics and I feel we as Indians are quite good and receptive as has been my experience as a community educator. The recent dengue cases and the community action that followed is exemplary. Probably we need to stop cribbing and complaining and start acting at whatever level we can and not expect a government response for everything. Many of us do but unfortunately publication bias is a reality

Except USA I have not seen any country, well prepared for disasters. Latest example of Orissa when the typhoon hit the coast is an example. To be studied. The houses are not built to withstand weather attack.men are not ready to help themselves and wait for government to do something, unlike China.however this time the results were far better than previous years I remember CM crouching in his office telling the TV crew that he can not go out in the rains long time back
