During the ‘Mann Ki Baat’ Radio programme, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi shared that a large number of people have been talking to him about the increase in usage of drugs. The Prime Minister described this as a very serious issue and assured that he will talk about the menace during the next ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio programme.

The Open Forums invites you to talk about the menace of drugs. Share how you feel this menace can be mitigated, what steps can be taken to get youngsters out of this. You can share anecdotes – how you saved children from this menace of drugs or if you have had a personal experience. NGOs working in this sphere should contribute. Your contribution would be a major step in freeing India from the menace of drugs.

Residential institutions are still having canteens with freely available cigarette and other tobacco products despite strict prohibition by the supreme court. First stop the first wrong step. We do make policies but forget or avoid to device mechanism - simply to get credit without work. Kindly start implementation of any such policy for which there is mechanism from my institution which is having about 2000 engineering students with DM as the officiating/Director.

The need of the hour in Drug Abuse Control is to promote and implement prevention and early intervention strategies to reduce the impact of mental and substance use disorders and promote mental health which translates into savings in health costs, criminal and juvenile justice costs, educational costs, and lost productivity.

Public education: The goal is to increase knowledge of a particular health issue or a new or existing law, publicize a community-based program, and reinforce instruction taught in schools or community-based organizations. It combines public service announcements on television and radio with billboards and posters. Social marketing uses a variety of media channels to provide a message to targeted groups of individuals to adopt a new behavior by showing them a benefit they will receive in return.

The youth receive messages from television, music, magazines, billboards, and the Internet glamorizing drug, alcohol, and tobacco use. Media literacy programs teach the youth how to analyze and understand the media messages they encounter. Students also learn to create messages that de-glamorize unhealthy activities like drinking alcohol and smoking. Media advocacy involves shaping the way social issues are discussed in the media to build support for changes in public policy.

Policy Adoption: There are six major types of policy approaches to prevent alcohol and other drug abuse: Economic policies, Restrictions on access and availability, Restrictions on location and density, Deterrence, Restricting use, Limiting the marketing of alcohol products. Policy can be an effective prevention strategy—as long as the laws and regulations are consistent with community norms and beliefs about the “rightness” or “wrongness” of the behaviour.

Targeted Prevention: Target prevention efforts to sub-populations that are at increased risk of developing substance abuse and related behavioral health problems. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are major risk factors for substance abuse. Implement interventions that reduce and prevent ACEs among children. Prescription Drug Abuse and Misuse - Prescription drug abuse affects individuals of all ages.

Classroom based programs that focus on life and social skills, that involve interactions among participants and encourage them to learn drug refusal skills, interventions that focus on direct and indirect (e.g., media) influences on substance use, that emphasize norms for and a social commitment to not using drugs, adding community components to school-based programs, programs delivered primarily by peer leaders and emphasizing training in life skills.

Drug manufacturing and its production has to be curtailed and also the effects of this menace has to be discussed on T.V and public broadcasting systems more frequently & regularly.To get the same enjoyment we need to develop local healthy drinks.

Moral ethics, respect to elders, good and bad thing should be effectively taught at school level / house. Regular prayer/yoga & association with good people makes our mind firm and be cautious while doing wrong things.One will feel sorrow to see young ones smoking/ using drugs to spoil there own life and suffering to family.Govt./Vol. Org can organise seminars/slide shows/lectures/video in colleges,media, theatres etc., to approach mass . It is the duty of parents to restrict money & movement.
