Manual scavengers are largely illiterate and have no exposure or aptitude for doing business or taking up self employment ventures.  This makes their rehabilitation in alternative occupations very challenging.

\

What are the ways in which the manual scavengers can be gainfully employed in other occupations, so that they do not return to manual scavenging? Participants may share success stories that they may be aware of.

Dear Modiji Cant wait to get feedback from gov officials of our project proposal submitted in our earlier post- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_LFiU73R3I- Do tell us what we should do to take it forward. Highlight of our program is that every citizen will be given an opportunity to participate in the sanitation funding scheme & the onus will not lie solely with corporates to do the funding. So we Indians will feel proud to be part of the nation-cleaning-exercise that will restore dignity.

The suggestions are very well intended and with due respect, we need to have more clarity about how the gov is planning to take this mammoth initiative forward. It would be helpful to have figures such as budget allocations and lead professionals that gov is planning to commit. If this info is made available on this forum then we can contribute to the discussions, otherwise it is like the story of six blind men trying to describe how an elephant looks like.

Sir, Yesterday was "Dashera" Festival. What I saw at river 'Tapi' at Surat was very saddening though our Prime Minister started Clean India movement just a day ago.Though it was because of Religious rituals and I also have faith in all religions but ignorance of peoples and the Priests who perform the ritual about cleanliness is depressing. I think those ( priest) whom people listen should be educated that religion and clean environment should go hand in hand. See the Picture at the river.

Respect PM, please make cleaning a respectful job. Make the job professional and increase the pay. It is the thing from the cast system which is making it look bad. People don't want to work in this field because it has become a social status. Make contractors and government bodies to spend money on the protection of the workers. Every month workers should get their own equipment, waterproof clothing and an oxygen mask. Have a proper training to teach them how to use those things efficiently.

First of all this group of people should be exposed for education. If they are not willing to be a part of main stream let them have separate primary school, build confidence in them and let them understand the importance of cleanliness and present them selves like others and be a part of the main stream. In addition why not we try co -operative farming like one common crop for the season in one area with the committees with proportionate sharing between farmers, with water resources shared.

Dear PM Sir, I read this post from an online journal. "There are Indians who do one of the dirtiest job for just Rs 250 a day and in return get disease and death. A 'sewer diver' Devi, is provided with bootleg booze to dull his senses before he begins his odious chore. They are not provided with protective clothing and are forced to spend hours a day in the filthy water in just their underwear." Before the clean India campaign, could u pls take some measures to stop this inhuman work?
