Manual scavengers are largely illiterate and have no exposure or aptitude for doing business or taking up self employment ventures.  This makes their rehabilitation in alternative occupations very challenging.

\

What are the ways in which the manual scavengers can be gainfully employed in other occupations, so that they do not return to manual scavenging? Participants may share success stories that they may be aware of.

First of all thanks for giving me opportunity to share my views.. we all know that our mother nation is at the verge of getting the "critical velocity of launching" it to the new heights of development.but if we take into account the type of development , it should be trickled down to every citizen of india. and for that to happen we should take every one in process of development.we have to take care of our surroundings and give full chance to mother nature to nurture itself.

Recently I had been to Satna Railway Station and it was a pleasant surprise to note that the Railway tracks were clean and free from Plastic Wastes , which I used to find earlier. However, I could see that still lot of passengers were throwing waste on platform and tracks, may be they were not aware of "Swaksh Bharat Abiyan" My suggestion is that there should be regular announcement from Railway's Announcement System (Arrival Departure of Train) about keeping the station clean.

The discussion on a clean India cannot take place without speaking about the condition of those who clean it. We will not be able to achieve 'Swachh Bharat' without ensuring dignity and health for our sanitation workers. Citizens of Mumbai, like other cities, seem to have relegated sanitation workers to a blind spot with little consideration for the collateral implication of their waste disposal behaviour on the dignity of those who clean our cities.

manual scavenging can be eradicated by teaching the scavengers to pre cast toilets and fix them at the required place. This being a repetitive job ,the scavengers can be trained over a period of time. Our society has already constructed about 2000 such toilets over the last 20 years for the rural folk and about 200 families have deposited their beneficiary contribution with our society for erection of toilets.
