Our current cities and towns are facing huge challenges in handling waste. The changing face of Sanitation is making the task of ULBs difficult. To take the load off ULBs and bring in the needed expertise to set up Waste Processing Units across the country, we propose a National Waste Management Grid which links all the Municipalities. This will go a long way in optimizing the investments and handling waste smartly. Through this, we can transfer waste to the appropriate Waste Processing Units.

Provide incentives(example: Loans at lower interest rates) to Private companies involved in waste management. Encourage private companies to collect and segregate dry and wet waste separately. The wet waste should be used to produce bio gas which in turn can be used as an alternate cooking fuel. Wet waste can also be used to produce manure. Dry waste like Bottles, Aluminum cans, paper, etc can be recycled. This can reduce the waste going to landfills.

NAGAR has envisioned a PEOPLE Public Private Partnership Model for Solid Waste Management (SWM) in the Prime Minister’s welcome campaign – Swachh Bharat. NAGAR is researching ward-wise status of SWM in Greater Mumbai to chalk out a comprehensive plan based on local needs and conditions. NAGAR’s goal is – a) phased target-reduction of waste dumped at landfills and b) creation of public assets from waste i.e. energy, public greening or other productive uses.
