Does a weaver's son want to continue weaving? If he does, does he have the marketing savvy to ensure a decent earning for his family? How does he understand his "worth" as a "weaver" in the society that he is proud of his trade and continues a tradition? Can a local trade guild provide him with a diploma course that will help him identify how to improve his "business"? What India needs is entrepreneurship more than "degrees". For that, the government needs to clean up its act for small biz.

We need to seriously rethink HE from the perspective of employment: how many of our students really need to fill what kind of jobs and where? If we need x number of medical assistants to fill country needs as well as needs in aging countries, then we need to ensure so many seats are available in our colleges/ univs and ensure the demand is met. Our ex-servant's son went to merchant navy school and joined the merchant navy and repaid his fees within 4 years of working.

There is a serious problem in the system when family trades/professions require that their children go to an "official" place of learning to get a certificate to say that they have "studied" that profession. If a son of a farmer wants to become a comp sci major, I can see him spending money to learn the field, but a farmer's son going to agri univ for a degree in agri? Doesn't sound right to me. I can understand if he wants a diploma in drip irrigation or something very technical / specific.

Before considering HE- every Indian student who wishes to pursue a "degree" needs to seriously ask how it is going to benefit him or her- is it just for looking good on paper? Or is it to pursue a passion or a "call to service" or a profession that s/he wishes to dedicate him/herself? This step is critical. Below, I found a son of a farmer bemoaning the increase in fees at an agri university- since when does a farmer's son need a degree to grow crops?

I have a story to share- a real one: I had an opportunity to go to Haiti after the earthquake there and work with the survivors. I travelled around that tiny country and discovered how many of the Haitians were "college educated" but unemployable and unemployed. The same holds true to many Indians todya- a country of "graduates" many of whom are incapable of basic critical thinking and problem solving. Higher ed has become a "craze" with no concrete "returns" on money paid as fees.
