The diseases that affect animal health also affect ours. Tackling them while they are present in animals not only safeguards our health, it is easier, more effective and less expensive to address.
Global disease prevention, management and control efforts must recognize the interdependent relationship between animal and human health – an approach known as ‘One Health.’ This ensures healthcare researchers and practitioners in both areas work hand-in-hand to prevent disease outbreaks across species and address the root cause of their spread. This has led to the successful management of deadly diseases like avian flu, and is being used to eliminate others in the future.

1. The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated
2. As long as people think that animals don't feel, animals will have to feel that people don't think.

Animals both large and small are a critical component to our environment. Domesticated animals, such as livestock, provide us food, fiber and leather. Wild animals, including birds, fish, insects and pollinators, are important to support the web of activity in a functioning ecosystem.

One billion people who live in poverty depend on animals – for jobs, food, income, transport and social status. Those animals can a play a huge role in lifting people out of poverty. Better animal protection means healthier animals. It means better livestock products. It means fewer infectious diseases for animals and people. And it can mean healthier ecosystems and fewer greenhouse gases too. All of these things can help communities leave poverty behind – for good.
