Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, in Karnataka State has been selected by the Ministry of Urban Development as one of the 100 smart cities to participate in the “Smart City” Challenge Stage-2 by the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India.

Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation was constituted in the year 1962 by combining two cities separated by a distance of 20 kilometers. This was a unique experiment in urban development history. The area of this Corporation is 202.3sq.kms, spread over 45 revenue villages. The population of the city as per the 1991 Census was 7 lakhs. The present population is nearly more than 9.43 lakhs. Under the Government of India Act of 1850, the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal council was established on August 15, 1855.

MY Views for Smart city are: 1)Proper waste disposal system to keep city clean 2)Supply of clean drinking water 24*7 3)Path hole free roads and Multilevel parking facility for easy flow of traffic 4)Relocation of slums areas by providing them low cost houses 5)Ring roads should be constructed to reduce traffic in the city 6)Developing and maintaining Gardens to keep city green 7)online citezen services should be started to avoid long queues at the govt. offices..

Suggestions: 1) Prohibition of Paper Hoardings everywhere on walls. Only selectively it has to be used. 2) Paintings of India/Karnataka Culture on walls to beautify the city landscape. 3) Hubballi is having too much of Dust problem. Daily Road Cleaning stictly to be followed with manual as well as Machineries. 4) Proper Road maintenance to be followed.

Following need to be adopted for a smart city :- 1.Beautiful Gardens to spend time leisurely for the aged as well as children 2.Clean drinking water for good hygiene 3.Traffic management system with wide & clean roads. 4. Separate Signal free road to avoid traffic congestion 5. People should be educated in all respects w.r.t. health, hygiene, good behaviour etc.

The Hubballi-Dharwad Pragati Sankalp Action Committee (HDPSAC) has collected suggestions from citizens across the city and has compiled a Citizens' Smart Vision for Hubballi-Dharwad Smart City. A detailed discussion on the Vision was conducted on 2-Oct. in Hubballi and the Vision was handed over to the Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad District on 3rd October for consideration.
