In the latest episode of Mann Ki Baat on 27th September 2020, Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi spoke about the art of storytelling. He mentioned that the history of stories is as ancient as the human civilization itself. ‘Where there is a soul, there is a story’.

As we are going to celebrate 75 years of independence, Prime Minister urged storytellers across the Nation to share stories of many inspiring events during the entire period of our enslavement. Especially, from 1857 to 1947, stories around every major or minor incident during this period can be introduced to our new generation.

“May this art of storytelling become stronger in the country, become more popularized and easier to imbibe - this is something we must all strive for”: PM Narendra Modi

Do you know of any inspiring event during the 1857-1947 freedom struggle that isn’t so well known? Maybe a long-forgotten hero who did not get as much prominence as he/she deserved? Maybe an incident which played a minor but important role in our struggle? A story you might have heard from a family elder, many years ago?

Tell us, we will feature your story for all Indians!

Share your story in the form of a video, audio clip, picture or essay.

Key Highlights The slaughter of innocent Indian men, women and children at Jallianwala Bagh in Punjab shocked the country and exposed the British raj for what it really was.The Non-Cooperation movement (1920-22), one of the first mass movements launched by Mahatma Gandhi, sought swaraj or self-government for all Indians.

These migrants did not come from the upper sections of society who had migrated for better opportunity. They were mostly common people searching for livelihood opportunities. They were also looking to get away from colonial subjugation and migrate to countries where they could live as independent citizens, not as colonial subjects. However, they soon realised that so long as colonialism remained, there was no escape from the tag of being a colonial subject.

Not all such ventures met with immediate success. But they left a lasting impact. These are stories of failed heroism and need to be told. One such story is that of the Ghadar party which fought for Indian freedom from thousands of kilometres away from the Indian shores. During the closing decades of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, a large number of Indians, largely Sikhs from Punjab, went to settle in the US and Canada in search of livelihood.

The locations and positions from which they fought. Given the fact that the British imperial rule in India was very deeply entrenched, it required a multi-pronged and multi-stranded struggle to dislodge it from India. However, popular imaginations of the freedom struggle tend to be somewhat restricted. In particular, the active involvement in the freedom struggle by Indians not living in India and fighting for Indian freedom from outside the Indian shores constitutes an important parallel stream.

#Glorious_bravehearts As we get set to celebrate our Independence Day, let’s spare a thought to the many forgotten heroes whose contribution to the Indian freedom struggle cannot be understated, writes Salil Misra, relating their unsung stories. India’s freedom struggle was truly a glorious and multi-faceted phenomenon. Contributions to it came from many directions and sources. There was an amazing diversity in the ways in which Indians fought.
