The District Administration Baghpat invites citizens, youth, innovators and institutions from across India on MyGov to share innovative and practical ideas to transform the Shri Parshurameshwar Pura Mahadev Mahashivratri Mela into a Zero Waste Mahotsav on theme “Bhakti Bhi, Prakriti Bhi”.

Building on the successful implementation of a Zero Waste model during Falguni Mahashivratri 2026 celebrations, this initiative aims to further strengthen sustainable practices and develop Baghpat as a model for green and responsible religious gatherings in India.

Aligned with the vision of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), Swachh Bharat and sustainable tourism, the initiative promotes environmentally responsible behaviour, reduction of waste, resource efficiency and community participation in large public events.

What kind of ideas are we looking for?
1. Participants are encouraged to submit practical, scalable and innovative ideas in areas such as:
a. Waste management and zero waste systems
b. Plastic-free alternatives for melas and religious events
c. Eco-friendly materials and green infrastructure
d. Awareness campaigns and behavioural change strategies
e. Volunteer and youth engagement models
f. Use of technology (apps, QR-based services, monitoring systems, etc.)
g. Sustainable tourism and visitor management

How to participate?
1. Submit your idea in maximum 200–300 words
2. Focus on solutions that can be practically implemented on ground
3. You may include examples, models or case references

What will happen to your ideas?
Selected ideas will be reviewed by the District Administration and considered for implementation during the Shravani Mahashivratri Mela scheduled in second week of August 2026. Selected contributions may also be recognised as part of a district-led innovation initiative and documented as good practices.

This is an opportunity to contribute to building a national model of sustainable religious events, promote environmental responsibility, and strengthen citizen participation in governance. Your ideas can help demonstrate how tradition, technology and sustainability can work together for a better future.

I welcome this commendable effort to make the Mahashivratri festival 'zero waste' and offer some of my suggestions to make it successful. First idea: The use of plastic and thermocol should be completely banned. Instead, the use of earthen cups, donas, leaves, and steel utensils should be encouraged. Second idea: A small unit should be established in or near the temple premises to recycle flowers and other organic waste into compost. Third idea: Separate dustbins should be placed at various places for waste segregation so that dry and wet waste can be collected separately. Fourth idea: A dedicated team of volunteers should be formed to create awareness among devotees and maintain order.

Celebrate Mahashivratri as a Zero-Waste Festival by replacing single-use plastics with reusable or biodegradable materials. flowers should be brought in dried leaves bowl, avoid paper, decirations should avoid balloon, also use of jute thread for flower decoration. recruitment of volunteers for cleaning and segregating the devolted flowers and fruits immediately, all the fruits and offerings should be contributed among the needies. Set up waste segregation bins, compost flower offerings into organic manure, encourage devotees to carry reusable water bottles, and organize volunteer-led cleanliness drives. separate lines for devotees with proper management to avoid crowd unbalance. This initiative will preserve the temple's sanctity, reduce environmental impact, and inspire sustainable practices among visitors and the local community too
