These standards should aim to make accessibility a natural part of all services, ensuring that every citizen can live, learn, and work with independence, safety, and respect

The draft report on Assistive Technology Standards and Accessibility Rules, 2025 provides a comprehensive and well-structured framework that addresses critical aspects such as definitions, classification, standards, certification, procurement, financial support, innovation, and enforcement. The inclusion of clear categories like Essential, Specialized, and Emerging Assistive Technology helps create a nuanced approach to cater to diverse user needs. The emphasis on certification by competent authorities and integration with existing schemes strengthens the credibility and practical implementation of these rules. The establishment of online portals, helplines, and incident reporting mechanisms reflects a user-centric and safety-oriented approach.A suggestion for improvement could be to enhance stakeholder engagement further, especially by incorporating feedback loops from actual users of assistive technology in real-time settings.

Ensuring universal accessibility in the service sector is vital for building an inclusive and empowered India. The Draft Accessibility Standards under the Accessible India Campaign are a visionary and commendable initiative.
All government and private service centers, digital platforms, and rural “Village Chain” systems must ensure disability-friendly infrastructure, well-trained and sensitized staff, and continuous public awareness to promote genuine inclusion across the nation.
Accessibility is not charity — it is empowerment and equal opportunity for all.
