Manual scavengers are largely illiterate and have no exposure or aptitude for doing business or taking up self employment ventures.  This makes their rehabilitation in alternative occupations very challenging.

\

What are the ways in which the manual scavengers can be gainfully employed in other occupations, so that they do not return to manual scavenging? Participants may share success stories that they may be aware of.

I remember reading it somewhere that Indian railways are one of the biggest employers of manual scavengers. This is evident from the design of the toilets in the trains. We are bringing in superfast trains to India.. before that, its time to re-design the existing toilets in trains so that the waste can be handled by machines (I am referring to the toilets in the airplanes). By this, I see two benefits. 1) addressing the manual scavenging problem and 2) the train tracks will be cleaner

To make India manual scavenging free some individual or organization will have to initiate to actually work on ground. However govt. officials feel that taking up this cause is irrelevant because of inbuilt problems in implementation of building efficient toilets.Earlier schemes CRSP,TSC,NBA have all failed in the last 25 years as the implementing agencies neither have time nor inclination to go to each household for providing toilets in rural India. Credible NGO must be encouraged in everyway

Pradhan Sevakji, Bengaluru is holding an exhibition on our biodiversity which is a very welcome initiative. Most of us do not know names of trees on our streets. It will be a good idea to get our students involved in putting nameplates on all trees in cities and towns, mentioning their botanical name, common names in Hindi, English and the regional language of the place. This will also help create a log of all our trees. All schools should have a garden of herbs used in Ayurvedic home remedies.

Sir, solution to any problem is strong implementation of any rule or law that exist presently. Now there exist rules like "M.S rules 2013" which are not followed properly. Eliminating insanitary latrines is the first step. Replace them with flush toilets.
