India is among 51 countries to sign the “Rome Declaration” on “Achieving Self-sufficiency in Safe Blood and blood products based voluntary non-remunerated donation”. Blood is an intrinsic requirement for health care and proper functioning of the health system. National AIDS Control Organization under Department of Health and Family Welfare has been primarily responsible for ensuring provision of safe blood for the country since 1992. National Blood Policy 2003 reiterates firmly the government’s commitment to provide safe and adequate quantity of blood, blood components and blood products.

However, in India, a needy patient or his relatives have to run from pillar to post in search of blood and the onus of procurement of blood still lies with the patient and not with the service provider.

Suggestions are invited on how to develop a nationally coordinated and well networked blood transfusion service in the country and reach 100% voluntary blood donation to enable us to meet the global goal of self sufficiency in blood and blood products.

1. A sick worker in Kerala visited an ESIC Dispensary on a Saturday and was told it was the doctor’s weekly off so he came the next day and was told it was the doctor’s weekly holiday and asked him to come on Monday between 10.00 A.M. and 1.00 P.M. When the entire country works 6 days week @ 8 hours a day how come a ESIC doctor works only 5 days @ 3 hours a day.

Can we create a blood bank where I can donate the blood which will be credited in my account (like bank account) which I can use for my family and friends as and when needed. This will encourage the person to donate the blood which can be used in future for his/her family or friends.

A lot of focus is required on promoting a healthy lifestyle in terms of eating healthy food and doing moderate exercise to keep at least the lifestyle disease at bay. Also, yoga should be made compulsory in all schools as it definitely leads to well being of students and if they take this healthy habit at a young age , it will also help them in maintaining good in their adult lifes.

Sir, we as a nation loose a good number of lives just because of non-use of seat-belts and helmets. No concrete rule is in place to tame this menace. We can do one thing to tame this!! Almost all ppl have life insurance either through personal cover or motor policy cover. We should add a clause such as, if the driver gets injuries or dies due to any injury which could have been avoided by use of seat-belts or helmets, a certain percentage of insurance amount should be cut (eg: 45%) and ppl should be made aware of this fact. Awareness should be given. This should become an eye-opener so that ppl are safe in both modes of travel. Now ppl will automatically use helmet/seat belts and RTO/police officials will not need to do inspection. It is like the exams and honor code at Stanford university, wherein the students sign the code that if any students violates the rule during exam, he is thrown out of the university. So there is no need to have an invigilator in the examination hall. Such should be the implementation.

The reason for non availability of doctors in rural health institutions is lack of basic facilities like good schools for children. You cannot expect a doctor to stay in a village and sacrifice the future of his children. Govt should improve the infrastructure in rural areas.
