India is among 51 countries to sign the “Rome Declaration” on “Achieving Self-sufficiency in Safe Blood and blood products based voluntary non-remunerated donation”. Blood is an intrinsic requirement for health care and proper functioning of the health system. National AIDS Control Organization under Department of Health and Family Welfare has been primarily responsible for ensuring provision of safe blood for the country since 1992. National Blood Policy 2003 reiterates firmly the government’s commitment to provide safe and adequate quantity of blood, blood components and blood products.

However, in India, a needy patient or his relatives have to run from pillar to post in search of blood and the onus of procurement of blood still lies with the patient and not with the service provider.

Suggestions are invited on how to develop a nationally coordinated and well networked blood transfusion service in the country and reach 100% voluntary blood donation to enable us to meet the global goal of self sufficiency in blood and blood products.

Recent hue & cry about the reconversions is farce. Conversions have been taking place for the last 70 years. People from the majority community were 7 are being converted to Christianity, Islam & Buddhism etc. No body raised a finger . In my vicinity recently 2 families have been converted. But when the right wing outfits started reconverting the hue & cry has been raised.Converting somebody is illegal but reconverting is not.

To make and keep India healthy smoking and drinking must be restricted. But our officials smoke and drink in public and flout every rule. Who will then administer the common people? Govt spends crores in ad for public awareness, but selfish politicians are least concerned.

2.If a sick worker has to wait for 48 hours for treatment why does he have to contribute towards ESIC from his salary? Why does an employer have to contribute thrice the amount of the worker for this sort of service? Why does the worker have to suffer at the expense of this irresponsible department called ESIC?. Why is the Government catering such an irresponsible department called ESIC
