India is among 51 countries to sign the “Rome Declaration” on “Achieving Self-sufficiency in Safe Blood and blood products based voluntary non-remunerated donation”. Blood is an intrinsic requirement for health care and proper functioning of the health system. National AIDS Control Organization under Department of Health and Family Welfare has been primarily responsible for ensuring provision of safe blood for the country since 1992. National Blood Policy 2003 reiterates firmly the government’s commitment to provide safe and adequate quantity of blood, blood components and blood products.

However, in India, a needy patient or his relatives have to run from pillar to post in search of blood and the onus of procurement of blood still lies with the patient and not with the service provider.

Suggestions are invited on how to develop a nationally coordinated and well networked blood transfusion service in the country and reach 100% voluntary blood donation to enable us to meet the global goal of self sufficiency in blood and blood products.

to make healthy India we must work on preventive health. our traditions are based on the preventive health. our traditional knowledge of medicine needs to be promoted. today for simple cuff or fever we look for chemical based remedies where as these can be very well managed by home remedies. the awareness related to life style, home remedies, Ayurveda and yoga should be promoted at mass scale. it will reduce the health expenditure of individuals as well as Govt along-with making healthy India.

Awareness in general community regarding blood donation and knowing perception why people avoid blood donation. IEC campaigns to rural and urban areas and provision of blood storage facilities at phc can prove one time investment and much more cost effective.

organise blood donation camp when gram sabha is organised in village. Blood banks should be integrated with the existing ATMs means ATB(any time blood) along with ATMs would be more viable option considering the vehement penetration of ATMs and large deaths because of unavailability of bloods in case of an urgent requirement.
