India is among 51 countries to sign the “Rome Declaration” on “Achieving Self-sufficiency in Safe Blood and blood products based voluntary non-remunerated donation”. Blood is an intrinsic requirement for health care and proper functioning of the health system. National AIDS Control Organization under Department of Health and Family Welfare has been primarily responsible for ensuring provision of safe blood for the country since 1992. National Blood Policy 2003 reiterates firmly the government’s commitment to provide safe and adequate quantity of blood, blood components and blood products.

However, in India, a needy patient or his relatives have to run from pillar to post in search of blood and the onus of procurement of blood still lies with the patient and not with the service provider.

Suggestions are invited on how to develop a nationally coordinated and well networked blood transfusion service in the country and reach 100% voluntary blood donation to enable us to meet the global goal of self sufficiency in blood and blood products.

Online Accessible national level Blood group databases of every indian with contact no.s along with nominal remuneration/ incentive should be encouraged to ensure all time high quality storage, availability, transparency in collection & disbursal by blood banks. Online Reports of time bound inspections to ensure strict standards of blood banks should also be publicized. The most hard truth is malnourished pregnant females.comprises the most cases which is preventable if proper diet ensured.

With the advent of corporate hospitals, health care has become big business. They charge exhorbitantly and the room rents are on par with 5 star hotel rates. Unfortunately, primary health care and Govt.hospitals at district level should be thoroughly overhauled, cleanliness should be improved, attendance of medical personnel should be ensured and health needs of poor and middle classes should be taken care by providing diagnostic services and medicines in the Govt.Hospitals.

blood donation is very important voluntary activity. blood donation institutions/blood banks should be there in each and every district and some selected sub district level. simultaneously it required efficient use.for efficient use of blood there must be facility in each and every blood bank for separation and preservation of various components of blood this is very costly endeavor and required monetary supports from governments and society and professionals.
