Digital Locker is one of the key initiatives under the Digital India Programme. A beta version (http://digitallocker.gov.in) of the same has been released on 10th Feb. 2015, by Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY), Govt. of India.

Digital Locker is aimed at minimizing the usage of physical documents and enable sharing of e-documents across agencies. The sharing of the e-documents will be done through registered repositories thereby ensuring the authenticity of the documents online. Residents can also upload their own electronic documents and digitally sign them using the e-sign facility. These digitally signed documents can be shared with Government organizations or other entities.

Key features of the Digital Locker System are:

• 10 MB of free space in digital locker to residents to access their documents through Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) and also securely store e-documents.
• e-sign online service to digitally sign documents

Residents are invited to use the Beta version of the Digital Locker System and provide suggestions and feedback on the same. Suggestions are also invited on the use cases for services which can be additionally provided by the Digital Locker System.

Is this a closed source development or the code is available for others to review and collaborate? Since it is a security related application, I think it'd be best to have the development out in the open as it would ensure more number of people looking at the source and fixing bugs. For example, large projects which require security like OpenSSL, or bitcoin servers are hosted publicly.

Moreover after clicking on multiple options such as My Requester, My Issuer, My Profile etc., it gets logged out and come on login page. So please resolve such bugs so that we can actually use it.

Though we have developed and launched the Beta version of Digital Locker, but still it has a lot of bugs in it such as: 1) While logging in, in spite of giving correct user ID, password, and Captcha, it gives an error for invalid character entered. 2) Once I logged in, if I click on Upload Document and select any document, then I get logged out. Very few times, it works. 3) After entering my correct PAN card no, once I click on verify, it doesn't verify it. It gives an invalid PAN card.

gas companies can be allowed to access customer information from digital locker since the information available at digital locker will be verified and digital signed it may be treated as verified information. links can also be provided from digital locker to various govt. agency customer/user accounts. With various documents an option may be their which allows access rights to different agencies. Not all agencies have access to all documents at digital locker.

create a central system, where all the data the government has on the person is stored, school marks, police cases, driving license, bank accounts. A person may choose to activate this feature or not. Integrate in to oauth system so we can login to our different accounts with same account. So eg i am going to an interview the interviewer wants to see my education details, so i login to their app, it will ask for access to education details, i press ok and they can see it on their app.

Suggestion: Digital Locker should provide in-built facility or in-built application to save our various bank accounts details, expenditures, savings etc in itself. This will help people to remember all their information at one place. There are 3rd party tools with such initiative, but their are mostly paid websites. Digital locker will be a trustworthy and common private arena of a citizen. For more information, email me at info.rahulsaxena@gmail.com or comment me on this post.
